Cattle Theft Hits Uyundo Village After Nearly 30 Years of Calm

Uyundo Village, Siaya County — Residents of Uyundo Village in North Alego Constituency were left in shock on Thursday morning after three cows were stolen from a local homestead, the first reported livestock theft in the area in nearly three decades.

The incident, which occurred around 2:00 a.m., disrupted the village’s longstanding peace. According to Mr George Onyango Owino the livestock owner, he woke up to check on the animals only to find their sleeping area empty.

“We woke up and found the cows gone. The place where they usually sleep was completely empty,”

said the farmer, who also noted fresh tire tracks at the scene, indicating the animals may have been taken away in a vehicle.

His wife, Carolyne Onyang, said she attempted to alert the assistant chief during the night. The local chief responded promptly the following morning and recorded an official statement.

Local elders confirmed that the last case of cattle theft in the village occurred in 1996, adding to the community’s growing concerns over renewed insecurity.

Villagers are now urging authorities to step up security patrols and enhance coordination between residents and local administration. Many fear that the incident could signal the return of livestock theft in a region that had long enjoyed peace.

Police have launched investigations and are appealing to anyone with information about the theft to come forward.
